The residential areas within the school district are subdivided by assignment. There are 6 high schools, 10 junior high schools and 29 elementary schools and 3 alternative education campuses.

The Katy Independent School District has a very rich history. The founding of the school district dates back in the year 1898. An elementary school and a high school were built in Sixth Street and Avenue A. After a year, they constructed a 1 room school made of wood. This 1 room school catered the needs of the students in all grade levels. Many campuses were established through the years. Currently, the district is planning to build 2 junior high schools. One is located in the north of “Mayde Creek High School” while the other school is at Wood Creek.
